Abolitionist Ale Works
Charles Town, WV · since 2017
Brothers Josh and Mike Vance opened Abolitionist Ale Works in June 2017 in a mid-1800s building on West Washington Street in downtown Charles Town. The plan was to call it Front Porch Brewing, but that name was taken, so they picked one with local history behind it. Mike runs the brewhouse and leans on barrel-aged farmhouse ales, wild ales made with West Virginia yeast, fruited sours and hazy IPAs, with about 20 taps that turn over every week. The kitchen does pizzas, sandwiches and appetizers, there is a small garden out back and an Airbnb condo upstairs. Tuesday is open mic night and Wednesday is a jazz jam.
