Ursus Brew Works

Air Force veteran Jason Martin opened Ursus in March 2026 after nearly two years of work on the Strand Building on Hale Street, a former pool hall and dance club. Ursus is Latin for bear, a nod to the black bear, West Virginia's state animal. Martin brews with assistant Scott Ferris, and chef Donnie Smith runs a scratch kitchen with burgers, sandwiches, wings, pierogi and poutine. The house taps change often and lean toward English and German styles, with IPAs, porters and lagers in the mix and guest taps from other West Virginia brewers.
