Upper Stem Brewery

Dan Winger opened Upper Stem in 2020 on a farm northeast of Hagerstown, starting out on converted dairy equipment and later moving up to a 10 barrel brewhouse. It is a Maryland farm brewery, so grain, hops, herbs and fruit grown on the farm go into the beer, and his wife handles much of the cellar and lab work. The taproom is small and most people sit outside at picnic tables, under the pavilion or in chairs in the woods, with acoustic music on summer weekends. Best sellers are California Oak, Mo and Killer Bees, and there is nearly always a Belgian style on tap.
